Learn how to juggle data from JSON, XML and YAML effectively with jq.

The jq Cookbook

If you develop and maintain modern web applications, REST APIs, or data science workflows, you have to effectively work with JSON. Often you need to extract the data you need from a complex structure of inside a JSON response. Or you need to manipulate the JSON response for it to be useful.
jq is an excellent tool for anyone working with JSON, whether for extracting data, manipulating JSON structures or simply presenting JSON in a clear format.

The jq Cookbook acts as both an introduction to and a cookbook-style reference for using jq:
  • Guides you on how to setup jq on your system, and running your first query.
  • Learn how to use to write queries to extract data from complex JSON.
  • Become proficient on how to use to transform and create JSON responses.
  • Extend your knowledge of jq to use on XML, YAML and TOML documents.
  • Contains an easy to access reference for common tasks.
  • The e-book is available in PDF, epub and HTML formats.
  • 100% DRM free!

About the Early Editions

The early edition of The jq Cookbook is now available for pre-order!
While I am currently writing the book, I wanted to get the early editions out as soon as possible. If you buy now, you will get free upgrades as new drafts get published, up to and including the final release.
The jq Cookbook used to be called Juggling JSON with jq. While I am quite proud of that title, I think The jq Cookbook is a bit easier to parse.
Updated on June 2, 2020: Originally I planned on making the final version ready by June 2020. However events in the past few months pushed back my writing schedule, and I hope to have the final version out before the end of the summer.
